Staten Island’s Snug Harbor hosts music-making robots
Staten Island Advance – SILive.com
An art exhibit at Staten Island’s Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens Livingston gives participants a chance to make music in a new way — by controlling robots. The exhibit called LEMURtron created by Brooklyn-based the League of Electronic Music Urban Robots — a group of artists and technologists who engineer robotic musical instruments –lets users interact with over 20 different musical robots in unconventional ways. The robots are controlled through a rotating set of about five interactive scenarios displayed on a floor-projected video interface in the center of the exhibit. These scenarios range from controlling a robotic xylophone by hitting the corresponding keys on the screen — similar to the movie “Big” — to one called “Billiard Balls. ” This lets users kick virtual billiard balls causing them to collide and triggering corresponding percussion robots. The League of Electronic Music Urban Robots was founded in 2000 by musician and engineer Eric Singer.
