At a time when entertainment at NBA games is highly choreographed with hip-hop music scantily clad dancers and massive electronic scoreboards a traditional pep band is a throwback. Although most college basketball teams have a pep band only a handful play at NBA games. “We’ve sort of been a trendsetter in the NBA as opposed to a trend follower” the Lakers’ Black said. “We do what we think our fans will enjoy and what we think is a good entertainment product.

? The trio?s second album ?Inventing the Wheel? will be released on June 29 on Ropeadope Records. As the new album?s title suggests Domnarski?s compositions tend to stray from the traditional jazz standards into more adventurous territory. His music blends electronic rock hip-hop and pop elements to create a unique sound not heard elsewhere in the instrumental jazz realm. ?It?s still jazz but it?s very much influence by rock and even some Motown hip-hop and groove elements? he said. ?It?s jazz in that it?s instrumental and improvisational but compositionally I really gravitate toward traditional song forms writing very strong melodies and grooves that kind of shy away from the traditional jazz format. We aren?t really a traditional jazz band that?s trying to do things with different sounds; the sounds are a part of the song they are very important to the compositional process itself.

” Despite being a slow repetitive 9-minute-plus cut its hypnotic cascading grandeur concludes with epic panache. Bill Callahan’s world can be a bit of an acquired taste but given a chance “Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle” just might sweep you away. Bill Callahan plays with Lights on Saturday at Le Poisson Rouge Manhattan and with Sir Richard Bishop on June 14 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg Brooklyn.

Thanks partly to these collaborators there are plenty of new ears joining the old listeners. "Americans understand our music because all our new influences are in place" Bagayoko says of the mod pop and electro strains in Welcome. "Africans can hear the roots of where we’ve been and the tradition of who we are. "And while there are new sounds and ideas to be heard throughout Welcome to Mali its most riveting song "Ce N’est Pas Bon" looks at an age-old worry: hypocrisy and corruption in politics. "We live these songs where some guy from government wants to keep the power and to keep the power they tell lies and refuse to keep their word" Bagayoko says. "In Africa there’s always been a lot of examples to inspire us to these types of songs.

The musicians recently travelled across nine cities in the country to promote their latest album Hello Hello. Their gigs featured a jugalbandi with New York-based tabla maestro Karsh Kale who has been playing the tabla for over a decade now. “Playing the tabla with a DJ set is not about layering its beats over electronic music. It is an entire process of adapting to the sound and adding to the overall attitude. There is a musical interaction that goes on between two musicians doing two different things at the same time” says Kale. Acts like Blot and Jalebee Cartel have also taken to such live jamming.

Mitchel is in the middle of some serious promo to support his brand new self-titled debut album that was released early last week. The album includes his first single Hey and has a sound that’s even tough for Mitchel himself to describe. “As far as genres go for my music I would have to make something up. “It’s not that it’s different like it’s going to sound like some crazy music no ones ever heard before.
