Chouinard first created a version of “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” in the early 1980s. After trying Debussy’s music she decided to perform to electronic music she triggered through sensors while she was dancing. But when a presenter in Japan asked for the “Prelude” as the prelude to her “Rite of Spring” she revisited Debussy’s music. “I remember thinking ‘Wow. Maybe now with the choreography so strong it can work with the Debussy’ ” she says. She needed to make her 15-minute piece shorter but says the notes of the music made it all fall into place.

comp –> MIAMI BEACH — Music it seems is recession-proof. At least that’s what hotels restaurants and clubs in Miami Beach and the city of Miami are finding this weekend. It’s the 24th annual Winter Music Conference which showcases electronic and dance music and draws some 60000-plus people to area clubs hotels and bars. Hotel owners say they have been sold out since midweek – the Gansevoort South was filled despite room rates of $895 and up – and conference organizers report packed venues. Winter Music Conference runs through Sunday.

Among the guest acts are Dave Ball of 1980s electro-popsters Soft Cell and The Grid Barry 7 and Ann Shenton from Add N (To X) and The Asbo Kid – a partnership between James Atkin formerly of EMF and Justin Welch from Elastica. “I first met Justin in Camden and we ended up having studios next to each other in London” recalls James. “We share the love of electronic music and we started making a few tunes anonymously under the name ‘Asbo Kid’ and the tracks got picked up by White Label Music who didn’t really know about our past. We put a record out and people seemed to like it.

Among the acts are Los Angeles-based producers The Glitch Mob German electro artist Anthony Rother and Detroit house DJ Delano Smith. “We spend a lot of time selecting artists and DJs that will appeal to electronic music enthusiasts” Jason Huvaere president of Movement organizers Paxahau Promotions Group said in a statement. “And I think with the addition of these 25 artists we have done a good job of putting together a solid mix of local and international performers to take the stages at Movement this year. ” Today’s lineup additions join a list of 35 acts including hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa and popular mashup artist Z-Trip that was announced last week. Carl Cox Loco Dice vs. Luciano and Derrick May will close the festival’s three nights.
