Trained in classical violin since age 4 Bird was long beholden to the great composers Dixieland jazz and Gypsy music. During the late ’90s he took a three-album spin with swing-era revivalists Squirrel Nut Zippers. (Check out the 10-minute Afro-electro jam on the “Useless Creatures” EP accompanying “Noble Beast. “)Still much of the beauty of “Noble Beast” comes from the intimacy and immediacy of Bird’s voice. “I think that’s cause we started [recording the album] with the vocals” he says. “When someone’s making sounds with their mouth you’re drawn to it because it’s a human it’s a person a personality so that should get the most attention.

In releasing his first recordings as music director of the BS Levine noted in a press conference yesterday that “there are a lot of things we do together with insight and clarity. Now it’s time to release them. It’s an electronic souvenir of hearing the BS in Symphony Hall. ”Levine announced the details concerning four separate recordings. Brahms’ “A German Requiem” and Ravel’s “Daphnis and Chloe” recorded live in Symphony Hall have been released as CD and downloads. New music from William Bolcom his flute concerto for James Galway and his Eighth Symphony as well as Mahler’s Sixth Symphony are available exclusively online both in mp3 and in HD Surround formats.

Now in its seventh year the festival as co-artistic director and Associate Professor of Music Composition Douglas Geers notes is meant to “open the door and invite people in. Spark is a world-class music festival a training ground for composers and a “community engagement tool putting creators and audiences together” according to Geers.
