Lily Allen’s sophomore album retains the playful spirit of her star-making 2007 debut “Alright Still” but musically and lyrically it relocates her from too-cool-for-school hipster pop to somewhere between the dance floor and the real world. Despite songs about God and George W. Bush it’s still strong uncontrived pop music. And it sounds stuffed with hits starting with the lead track “The Fear. ” “I did a retro thing last time” Allen said. “And since I did that a lot of other people did it too.

ne day it was grey drizzly wet even and it felt like the end of the music industry but the next day the sun came out and the mood was upbeat again. And of course the feel-good music of British artists such as Seth Lakeman Jamie Cullum and Honey Rider and French electro acts like Benjamin Diamond and Variety Lab featuring a guest appearance by folk-rock stalwart Donovan helped too. ne day it was grey drizzly wet even and it felt like the end of the music industry but the next day the sun came out and the mood was upbeat again. “The target audience is business people in search of a quick upscale lunch — hand-cut crisp fried fingerling russet potato chips; dim sum and Asian lobster rolls” Ryan writes. Sounds about right. Seems they’re also going for the nightlife crowd: At night “guests will bask in the different levels of lighting reflecting off the expansive chandeliers and mirrors while listening to music ranging from cutting edge electro-lounge to smooth eclectic beats. DJ Mario will offer live music-styling Thursday through Saturday evenings from 10 p.

Nothing against any of these guys but it’s still ultimately rock & roll. After this past week at Detroit the concerts move to Chain Reaction and the pattern seems to hold. So where are the electro artists? Metal? DJs? Hip-hop? Latin? That night I caught up with Luke Allen the guy now in charge of the C Music Awards. I asked him if there was a chance of seeing the genres getting a little more mixed-up in future concerts and he said that though there would be representation from other genres at the awards—there is indeed a Best Hip-Hop category—for the most part the showcases are looking like mostly rock bands because well that’s the kind of music that people in range County play. I’m not trying to criticize Allen for this. He’s one of the nicest guys in the music “scene” here I’ve met thus far and has been doing well with the showcases (the one I attended was packed—on a Tuesday). I wonder though if the C music scene is quite as homogeneous as these lineups tend to suggest.
