as the nighttime’s guiding figure. Since the mid-1990s though New York’s electronic dance-music scene has fragmented culturally and sonically. The styles have multiplied and splintered drawing audiences defined by age race and class. Clubs too began to cater to separate subcultures while larger clubs aiming to attract broader audiences closed. Yet that old diverse spirit was easily identifiable at TMB’s Cielo set. Sharing the floor were graying house-music fans bridge-and-tunnel club kids a couple of transgender dancers and a few gay couples as well as young Latinos and African-Americans who chanted “T! M! B!” in front of the D.

IMPS – Remixed on Mule Electronic
BERLINISTA Berlin
At the very beginning of the year IMPS return with a collection of exclusive remixes of their favorite electronic music artists. IMPS is the collaboration of the Swedish super-duo Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson aka Minilogue who have already released on Cocoon Traum Crosstown Rebels and Wagon Repair as well as Decay and the Australian multi-instrumentalist duo of Ian Chaplin and Philip Rex. Together they came up with one of 2008’s most innovative full lenghts which earned them praise by music critics around the globe. The “Remixed” compilation brings together a group of today’s most influencial electronic music producers whose work gets connected by the beautiful musicianship of “Bring ut The Imps”. Thomas Fehlmann the legendary German producer hits things off by a re-edit route pushing all the right buttons with a psychedelic depth that reminisces his work with The rb.

The crowd — plenty of skinny girls with glasses but also no shortage of unshaved young men in knit caps drinking ld Style beer in cans — was soon bobbing and swaying to Bird’s quirky soulful melodies. nstage Bird was engaged in something of a musical high-wire act whistling singing and manically shifting from violin to guitar to glockenspiel. All the while his feet were busy working the pedals of an electronic looping station that recorded and then played back his musical progressions in short intervals. He layered one musical passage on top of another gradually nudging each song toward its crescendo. Bird’s sound is not easy to categorize. His songs are swelling and orchestral the legacy of years spent studying classical violin at.

Last Night: New Year’s Eve at Sea of Dreams and Eclectic Fever

Probably best described as a fusion of electronic music hip-hop and performance art the band – assisted by dancers acrobats and some guy in a mechanic’s uniform who swung across the stage on a rope which descended from the ceiling – had extremely high energy a point not lost on the equally energetic (and possibly chemically-enhanced) crowd. Mutaytor was so compelling it was easy to forget there were two other stages going off simultaneously. Weaving through the crowd we made our way to the main stage where Thievery Corporation was playng their first NYE live show ever (according to co-founder Eric Hilton). Thievery in concert was somewhat like a global musical revue; Hilton hung in the back playing keyboards and the other TC principal Rob Garza strummed on a guitar complemented by a drums bass percussion additional guitar and a constantly revolving bunch of vocalists.

But will the electro sound really catch on?The polished robopop of stars like Madonna Kylie Britney and Girls Aloud has enjoyed phenomenal success among young fans who shape the charts. Those acts have been moulded by the commercial pop machine with all the meticulous songwriting and styling that involves. But – unlike in the 1980s – newer cooler electronic acts often struggle for major success. And what does the future hold for guitar music?Bands like Kings of Leon Coldplay asis The Killers and Elbow all enjoyed a phenomenal year in 2008. But others suffered disappointing returns. The Kaiser Chiefs Razorlight The Kooks Keane The Fratellis and The Pigeon Detectives all failed to make it into the top 40 albums of the year.
