Sissoko Ibrahima: Breaking dance boundaries
Jakarta Post – May 31, 2008
"I want to tell something to the audience" he said. "And I do it through dancing. " He compiles music for his dances from diverse sources including African and electronic music. Through choreography he transfers a message by incorporating dance with d*cor costume props and lighting. As for hip-hop battles some members of the company have indeed had their debut in battles and are still engaged in such events now. "Battling and dancing on stage are two different things but both of them are important to me. In battles a dancer can progress and exchange movement.

A management graduate from Columbia University and currently the Head of Marketing Management Department at Manipal Institute of Media and Entertainment Anil Srinivasan combines his musical and academic interest with much ease and élan. The certified piano player from Royal School of Music has sliced a path for himself in the world of classical music through best-selling album ‘Madhirakshi’ with ‘Sikkil’ Gurucharan and ongoing ventures with Mandolin U. Perfect blend “I learnt beyond Mozart and Beethoven at the music school. Learning about 20th century composers was the best thing in the course. ” At home in both the worlds Anil’s piano expertise came initially from the family of Semmangudi Srinivasan Iyer… Better pieces go well up to the rate of luxury cars. ” Popular music For obvious reasons electronic versions of the piano are doing the rounds at most concerts. Is the quality of its acoustics on par with the conventional ones? “Nearly. Electronic ones come with keys as heavy as the conventional ones making the sound match with the older versions. But we still find it difficult to accept electronic veena when we can get a conventional one for the sheer reason that it doesn’t sound as good as the latter. Piano’s case is similar.

Seen here in Bangalore with DJ Akshai Sarin The phrase ‘settle down’ is a bit of a far flung for DJ Stella Nutella. Born in Ornskoldsvik Sweden little did she know that one day she will be one of the most sought after DJs in the world. After conquering 10000 destinations across 25 countries this glittering star of the international psy-trance scene has arrived in Bangalore through an artist representation agency. She has already played at a gala of a wide-reaching music magazine and is looking forward to record with some local artists… Though becoming a mixer was never her childhood dream. DJ Stella who is not a big advocate of genre-based music likes playing a mix between progressive trance house electro and techno and is inspired by the likes of Depeche Mode and Front 242. She believes that the current electronic scene has immense potential — specially with artists like Trente Muller Sander Vandoorn and Bookashade — but she is also declaratory of the fact that the music industry is in a crisis situation. “Piracy is spreading like plague to all corners of the globe. This is like the Black Death of the music industry. Artists have stopped reaping benefits from their hard work. However the brighter side is that making music has become easier.

Santogold: a flash of gold in a black and white world
Telegraph.co.uk – May 31, 2008
ArtistesOf all the Next Big Things put forward by the British music press at the beginning of this year one artist was tipped for the top with rare unanimity – a black American singer known as Santogold. Her real name is Santi White. She grew up in Philadelphia before moving to the trendy Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant in 2005… Her self-titled debut album released earlier this month is both timelessly melodic and thrillingly contemporary. There’s barely a dud tune on there and yet it is almost impossible to categorise for the simple reason that it embraces so many styles. Some tracks are reminiscent of Blondie’s new wave; others have a more hi-tech electronic sound occasionally nodding towards Missy Elliott’s future-rap. There are surprises at every turn including one random blast of digital reggae. But perhaps the biggest surprise is the fact that the whole thing hangs together as a complete and vibrant album thanks to its creator’s irrepressible magnetism. When I meet White on a flying visit to London her lurid sensibilities hit me first in a retina-scorching visual assault. She sports a lemon-yellow sweatshirt alongside skin-tight black-and-white leopard-print jeans and turquoise ankle boots.
10 things to do at this year’s music festivals
Guardian Unlimited – May 31, 2008
6) Watch the Mighty Boosh BandForget boring proper bands with their identi-kit Converse and skinny jeans. We want glamour theatre and er sequin catsuits. We also want amazing tunes like Electro Boy and Mutants so what better place to hear them than when they’re being bashed out live as the Mighty Boosh headline their own festival at the Hop Farm in Kent on July 5. Hear what Noel Fielding has to say about it all… 10) Oh and listen to some music too! The phrase “boutique festival” doesn’t just mean you have to spend weeks preparing your fancy-dress outfit (although this is still very important). No it also means that the line-up to events such as Bestival Truck or Underage have been picked with love not demographics in mind. Bestival is maybe this year’s top festival for music with the returning My Bloody Valentine closing the season in sonic style. Scan the rest of the bill (Aphex Twin George Clinton Crystal Castles 808 State) and salivate.
