Louis Post-Dispatch SLU’s Billiken Club gives the gift of a top-notch free show tonight (Thu. ) bringing electronic psych-pop band Caribou to its stage. The band’s critically acclaimed 2007 record ?Andorra? features intricate sing songy synth arrangements and ethereal vocals bringing to mind Blonde Redhead and Working for a Nuclear Free City. Underneath the soft stuff the music has a punk rock edge to it. The band weathered a setback a month ago when drummer Brad Weber fell from a ladder while setting up a video projector. ?Ahmed (Gallab) has filled in for three weeks now and he’s been fantastic? said Dan Snaith Caribou’s creative force while the band took a pit stop on the road… I dreamed about this since I was a kid so I have no plans (to pursue Mathematics. ) I’m open to it in the future though. ? Snaith Notes:Listening habits: He has a massive genre-spanning vinyl record collection which includes spiritual music free jazz kraut rock hip hop and dance and electronic music. ?I prefer silence and reading books while we’re driving on tour. While I’m at home I like to spend all my time listening to and making music. ?Current faves: The F–buttons (UK) James Holden (UK) Junior Boys (from Snaith’s native Hamilton Ont. ) ?Their new album is totally stunning.

‘ ” GHOSTS OF A PSYCHEDELIC EMPIRE My Education whose fourth album “Bad Vibrations” is due out in June formed the same year as Explosions and certainly share some influences. “I think we both listened to ‘Young Team’ a lot” founder and sole remaining original member Brian Purington says with a laugh. But over three albums and a striking single with hip-hop artist Dalek My Education has folded electronic music and avant-garde composition into their epic sound. They wrote a score for F. Murnau’s 1927 silent film “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” and premiered it at the Alamo Drafthouse last March. Purington puts his sweeping cinematic sound in a different local context that of Roky Erikson and the Butthole Surfers.

Having demonstrated unexpected staying power as well as increasing ambition Radiohead next released OK Computer a progressive electronic-tinged masterpiece that became one of the most acclaimed albums of the ’90s. Initially called On a Friday the band began pursuing a musical career in earnest in the early ’90s releasing the Drill EP in 1992.
