Bass notes were reproduced reasonably well but they lacked the low-down punch we found in Creative’s higher-end models. Bass is a bit slow in these headphones leading to a very rich warm sound. Despite this they’re adequate for listening to beat-driven genres such as electronic music. Treble quality was overall less remarkable than the other frequencies often tending to be a bit quiet and overpowered by the bass and mid-range. This was slightly problematic when listening to female vocalists and pop music where the higher notes often felt rolled off. We didn’t notice any digital noise or fuzziness when connecting the heaphones to a variety of input devices. The headphones are easily driven and can play at reasonably high volumes.

Now having just released their stunning second album Apocalypso the Sydney duo are ready to conquer more stereo systems around Oz. Already their two lead singles This Boy’s in Love and My People are getting plenty of airplay. Apart from their electro undercurrent the songs couldn’t be more different. This Boy’s in Love is a falsetto-tinged 1980s-style soul-soarer while My People is a testosterone-fuelled stomping party favourite which went down a treat at the Gold Coast. "It was out of control" says singer Justin Hamilton. "It’s like Mad Max up there. Everyone just goes crazy… "The resulting album sounds like it could have come out of any of the coolest clubs of San Francisco or Berlin or London. "We’ve always taken inspiration from overseas" says Hamilton. "We never really wanted to make Australian-sounding music. We always love bands from England and Europe so hopefully this is a record for the world. "The Presets who met as classical music students are certainly dedicated to their cause. Whether it’s turning up to a gig at San Francisco’s biggest gay pride street party straight off a trans-Atlantic flight or being blown with black soot for the video shoot for This Boy’s in Love they’ve suffered for their art. "That shoot was horrific" remembers Hamilton.
Annie Nightingale: angst and decks

) Presumably her listeners can stay up only with the help of drugs? ‘Yeah but it wouldn’t make any difference. This music isn’t particularly about that… With breakbeat I think it is more drink culture. ‘The music she plays is not to everyone’s taste: it’s hard to hum any of the tracks once they are over as they all seem to merge into one pounding electronic swirl. Do her friends – friends her own age I mean – share her taste in music? She laughs. ‘One came round the other day and I was listening to some stuff and she said “This is like root-canal work to me. Trouble is I don’t want to play more mainstream stuff at home because that could have been time spent listening to new stuff. I get sent it constantly on CD vinyl MP3s digital downloads.
