“ur band’s kind of based on luck it always has been” says drummer Loel Campbell on the surge of exposure the band’s gained in the last few months – between the Juno nod the increased radio play of the single “Weighty Ghost” and the upcoming spots on monster summer festivals such as Pemberton and V Fest. For two of the guys in the band – Campbell and bass player Mike Bigelow – that luck has just doubled. They’re nominated twice in the Alternative Album category thanks to their work with Toronto electro heroes (and Lou Reed’s favourite new band) Holy Fuck. We chatted with these self-described “nice guys” about how their handling the competition and who they think really benefits from all the Juno fuss. n how do you feel about the in-house competition? Loel Campbell: We’re all friends and we don’t really tour with Holy Fuck anymore or whatever. We’re definitely hoping for Wintersleep more. [laughs]Mike Bigelow: Unfortunately the guys in Holy Fuck or the main guys Brian and Graham can’t be here because they’re on tour right now… So it’s really nice. LC: I think they’d be most impressed if we won I think or prouder. It’s just like – it’s the big music awards in Canada and it’s nice to have some sort of validation. What about the other “Juno” from Halifax actress Ellen Page? LC: We go to the same coffee shop. MB: It’s a good one. LC: She was there I just looked over and she was enjoying coffee. [Everyone laughs as Campbell just blushes a few shades of pink] MB: I think Loel’s got a crush.
