Geek chic
Newsday – Mar 24, 2008
Boys surpass girls only in posting video online. In adulthood women still lag well behind men as Web content creators and in professional IT jobs but there are growing efforts to close the gender gap by hitting girls with the geek-is-cool message early on. As proof of how cool it can be Knight has parlayed her computer hobby into electronic music as well as jewelry-making. As a laptop DJ she’s known as Liz Revision she produces her own electronic music under the name Quantazelle and she owns a record label called Subvariant—evidence that in some circles there’s a fine line between geek and hipster. The Internet also has helped girl geeks with more unusual hobbies come out of the shadows as it makes it easier to find others who share their interests. Erin McKean a lexicographer (translation: dictionary editor) who has been fascinated by how dictionaries are put together since she was a kid maintains an admittedly geeky dressmaking blog called A Dress a Day that has drawn a small following of people who are passionate about old sewing techniques. “When there are 6000 other people who are interested in the same thing you are it leads you to be less apologetic about it” said McKean 36 who lives in North Park.
Still busting sterotypes

’ — Clegg By SIMN MARCUS JHNNY Clegg is in many respects the quintessential icon of the new South Africa. He has won the hearts of millions worldwide with his eclectic music used his talents as a weapon against apartheid and traversed racial stereotypes when it mattered most. Yet he is also something of an elusive figure and does not easily fit into the celebrity mould. Clegg’s new album ne Life is clever and eminently listenable. It bears his signature-sound but will appeal to newer audiences too. n it he recognises the ways in which cultures and languages interact notably in Jongosi… Yet many of the things we are dealing with are the normal issues of development. The environment is a huge and growing area for activism. I have been involved in electronic waste management for years now. I’m a director of a company which recycles the iron found in electronics and does this in a way which creates employment. We have a depot in Benoni and a large factory near Durban and we have clients from all over the world. A lot of electronics contain toxins. We have developed techniques to disassemble them manually separate them out and recycle what can be recycled.
Foals – ‘Antidotes’ (Transgressive) Released 24/03/08
Gigwise – Mar 24, 2008
From the blog world to the broadsheets Foals have had everyone who encounters them foaming at the mouth for well over a year now. Five comfortably middle class highly educated boys making music that has as much to do with getting pissed and pulling as The Pigeon Detectives know about splitting the atom. Indeed it’s not normally this way. Looking back over the past ten years or so music this distinctive does not achieve broad exposure and love. So it’s a testament to the growing musical palette of the British youth and of course Foals themselves that ‘Antidotes’ is not just the most technically capable and musically ambitious album so far in 2008 but also the most likely to make a new band on an indie label absolutely fucking enormous. So what does it sound like? The most important thing to say is that it is almost stubbornly uncompromising… It seems easy and even banal to compare the two but ‘Antidotes’ is the natural successor the Klaxons ‘Myths f The Near Future’ in terms of diverse alternative British music to be proud of. Both albums have clear dance floor stand out tracks (If ‘Red Socks Pugie’ isn’t THE single of 2008 then we are in for a good year) and the more pure and unadulterated end of their respective influences. Where Klaxons looked to early 90’s rave and the latter day electro clash Foals are more indebted to the likes of Sweep The Leg Johnny and hardcore punk. These ideas of smashing the rules and building them back up piece by piece are clear for all to see on the second half of ‘Antidotes’ which contains the much more bare ‘Heavy Water’ and previous B-Sides ‘Two Steps Twice’ and ‘Big Big Love (Fig 2. These largely instrumental songs are where most of the fly by night fans will depart and find fans in the people that would normally spit on an NME cover star. The album ends with ‘Tron’ a conglomeration of all the ideas thrown into the pot over the previous 42 minutes.

Taipei Times – Mar 24, 2008
Francis took trombone playing to a new level with rock star moves – he jumped in the air and executed a flying kick while playing which sent some of the ladies in the crowd into a frenzy. The group was followed by Johnny Fatstacks which started out a bit on the slow side with cover songs. nce the group moved onto its original music the outfit’s real style shone through. Johnny Fatstacks is a rock group that crosses the line into rockabilly and alternative country which sets it apart from the more generic sounds of local run-of-the-mill bands and makes dancing mandatory. The Money Shot Horns played Bliss on Friday and pleased the crowd with crooning blues lyrics and funky sexy music. n Saturday night superstar DJ SL played a kicking set at Barcode. It was a definite departure from the norm and introduced a new sound to Taipei: dance-house-electro-rock… They were pretty rad. They hang out at that Vicious Circle club. The electro thrash was top notch; I was really excited to hear Yell. It was good to dance to. There was something in the air. The neon theme was mostly about the clothes which were really different with super busy prints and that’s really fresh right now and the trend for this summer. The night was meant to be a promo for Pet Shops Girl a shop in Ximending.
