From a lab in Paris to a concert hall in Glasgow
The Herald – Mar 26, 2008
In two weeks Ircam through its academy will come to the UK for the first time and be resident in Glasgow for almost a week. Around nine specialists from Ircam will be resident. There will be a lecture on the Electronic Music Revolution from one of its greatest experts and most influential figures the veteran composer Jonathan Harvey; a hugely varied series of musical events condensed into two nights featuring the BBC SS its chief conductor Ilan Volkov and performers from Paris; and a series of Ircam academy workshops devoted to computer-music composition to which more than 20 composers including leading figures such as Sally Beamish have signed up. There will be several associated events including a Scottish Chamber rchestra concert a strong presence by the Scottish Ensemble the electronic music team from Aberdeen University the Edinburgh Contemporary Arts Trust (ecat) and a come-all-ye two-day virtual classroom in the BBC at Pacific Quay. Think of cycles of existence. Each has the same form: birth growth decay and deathWhy the UK? Why Glasgow? In two words: Jonathan Harvey. For the past three years Harvey has been composer-in-association with the BBC Scottish Symphony rchestra from which three major commissions have resulted… He has worked there since its early days and in the past five years alone has produced five compositions using Ircam technology. For those suspicious of electronics in classical music or who believe that electronic music means sitting in an empty concert hall between two loudspeakers Harvey is one of its supreme most experienced and ultra-sophisticated practitioners;a man whose deep-rooted spirituality and involvement in cutting-edge technology are indivisible. “I don’t only do electronic music” pointed out the composer now in his late sixties. “It’s never been the absolute basis of my thinking. But it has completely and profoundly influenced me. I tend to think when writing for chamber ensemble choir orchestra or whatever in terms of electronic studio experiences: how we analyse sound how we play with it move it change it push it and pull it. “These sorts of adventures in the studio I almost instinctively now try to capture with instruments.

Since then WhiteWilliams has toured with Gregg Gillis’ GirlTalk and Dan Deacon and foundhimself gravitating towards pop music with the use of vocals and physicalinstruments. This shows up in Smokewhere many of the sounds are algorithmically generated guitars and vocalsrepitched copied and pasted and sometimes heavily edited or not edited whenthey should be. The result is a truly modern – yet at certain moments nostalgic- collection of irresistible pop songs.

The more things change …
Detroit Metro Times – Mar 26, 2008
The atmospheric tunes featured beats that were more like murmurs of the heart or electromagnetic static at low voltage — not exactly DJ friendly jams to make the boys howl and the girls to start stripping. But the art music community took notice anyway. Thinkbox performed at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2003 and at Mutek in Montreal in 2004. As a collective they released Settings and Guitar exquisitely packaged limited edition CDs. The latter consisted of 12 tracks (credited to individual members) filled with six-string distortion feedback fuzz echo delay and other digital studio manipulations that matched up nicely to the work of contemporary guitar-drone innovators ren Ambarchi and Christian Fennesz. The group — Christopher Bissonnette Mark Laliberte Chris McNamara Steve Roy Rob Theakston and Bill Van Loo — is hard to pigeonhole because it’s made up of audio and visual artists full-time scholars and academics.

New music explored in ‘Duo Contour’
Western Courier – Western Courier (subscription) – Mar 26, 2008
“I studied with him at the University of Iowa. “Romig who tours and records with new music ensemble Luna Nova which Ferguson has also played with wrote one of the pieces for “Duo Contour” a percussion composition titled “A Slightly Evil Machine. “The style of music played Monday night broke away from traditional conventions and explored other possibilities with sound using electronic devices called live electronics to distort and change the percussion and trumpet tunes in new and interesting ways. These live electronics recorded the music played during the performance and mutated it spitting it back out during the live songs to add a heightened level to the program. Altogether the style used was something simply called new music a genre embraced by Ferguson and Altoft. “It’s kind of like a movement and also music that’s newly composed” Ferguson said of new music. “Basically it’s based on Luigi Nono’s (a famous influential Italian composer of the late 20th century) works and also from the 1950s and ’60s basis of this compositional style of music.
