Subsequently ditching the almost inevitable creative cul-de-sac of rock for the more appealing rush of the dancefloor the pair released their debut single “The New Wave” in 1993 on the celebrated Soma label. Instantly hailed by the dance music press as the work of a new breed of house innovators the single was followed by “Da Funk” the band’s first true hit (the record sold 30000 copies worldwide and saw thorough rinsings by everyone from Kris Needs to. Although the group had only released a trio of singles (“The New Wave” and “Da Funk” as well as the 1996 limited pressing of “Musique”) in early 1996 Daft Punk were the subject of a minor bidding war. The group eventually signed with Virgin with their first long-player Homework appearing early the following year (a brief preview of the album “Musique” was also featured on the Virgin compilation Wipeout XL next to tracks from Photek… As with the earlier singles the group’s sound is a brazen dancefloor-oriented blend of progressive house funk electro and techno with sprinklings of hip-hop-styled breakbeats and excessive crowd-firing samples similar to other anthemic dance-fusion acts such as. After four long years of eagerly awaiting a follow-up to their brilliant debut Daft Punk finally issued Discovery in March 2001. The live record Alive 1997 followed near the end of the year and a by now predictable four-year wait preceded the release of Human After All in early 2005.

The band has been performing together with regularity throughout the intervening years but it actually wrote new material for Funplex. Though its songs are as wacky and danceable as ever Strickland says that he had to imagine what a modern incarnation of The B-52s would sound like. “So I had been listening to a lot of electronic dance music and still listening to a lot of rock ‘n’ roll and I thought it’d be perhaps an interesting project to try putting those two sounds together with our own sound” Strickland says. “And for me that was the pivotal point. “That and the fact that their dedicated fans were clamoring for more. “That’s what we were thinking” Strickland says. “If we’re going to keep doing this we need new material you know? And our fans have been very patient and very generous but they were beginning to sort of bang on the door — ‘We want new songs.

By David Menconi News & bserverMarch 11 2001 Durham — John Bemis grins broadly as he looks at the audience. “Wow” he says tuning his guitar “an attentive audience. “Attentive and they’re drinking beer” adds his bandmate bassist Paul Dowds… Acclaimed folk-rock singer-songwriter Peter Case for example will play two shows in the area next month — a house concert at Pine Hill Farm and a show at the Nash County Cultural Center a church in Nashville that also holds concerts. Much of the Triangle’s house-concert circuit is centered on Durham in living rooms that can seat up to 80 people. Both grassroots and high-tech the shows are publicized through electronic mailing lists. Tickets generally cost $10 and the organizers do these shows on a not-for-profit basis. After expenses (chair rental soda pop and snacks usually) they hand over the remaining proceeds to the performers. The shows take place earlier in the evening than a club show (typically around
unamplified in a smoke-free environment. The only alcohol is what concertgoers bring themselves.

since 2002 is leaving the video game publisher in the midst of its hostile buyout bid for smaller rival Take-Two. EA did not give a reason for Jenson’s departure; a spokeswoman said Monday it was a “mutual decision” between him and Chief Executive John Riccitiello. After leaving the company in 2005 Riccitiello rejoined EA as CE in April 2007 replacing Larry Probst who’d been at the company’s helm for 16 years. “It’s pretty clear that he’s building his own team” said Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter… During his tenure EA enjoyed its status as the world’s largest video game publisher but the company’s stock price has stagnated in recent months. It is far below a record high of more than $71 in March 2005. He’s leaving EA at a turning point not only for the company but also for the video game industry which by some measures is eclipsing the global music market. retail sales of video game hardware software and accessories hit nearly $18 billion in 2007 according to the NPD Group. Shares of Electronic Arts jumped $1.
