Groove is in the art
Guardian Unlimited – Feb 23, 2008
Andy himself fairly quiet and reasonably cute but happy to hold forth on his designated dancing zones concept is well placed to be calling the shots on dance laws because he happens to be the driving force behind 2008′s first great dance single. Blind is an emotionally-charged and retro-futuristically danceable slice of modern pop music. And along with the rest of Andy’s debut album it’s music that looks back to Greek mythology throws its toga to the ground and waves its bits around providing a snapshot of the last 30 years in electronic music. Andy’s releasing the whole thing under the name Hercules and Love Affair which is a much more exciting name than Andy Butler Who You Might Know As A Disco DJ From New York Plus An Assorted Cast f Extras Including Antony Hegarty From Antony And The Johnsons. Andy’s brought us for lunch today with some of those bandmates. There’s Kim Ann an NYC club promoter and jewellery designer with a brilliant tattoo of Ms Pac-Man on her arm. Music lifts dementia’s constant fog
The Australian – Feb 23, 2008
They played her a swirling and passionate orchestral piece by Edward Elgar and when asked to describe how the music made her feel Dorothy responded with "loving". But it was the next piece a 1937 Art Tatum version of Gone with the Wind which had the most profound effect. Immediately her left hand started to beat in time to the music and her face was suddenly suffused with a joyous smile. When asked if she had danced in her youth 82-year-old Dorothy began to talk animatedly about the three girlfriends she used to go dancing with each Saturday. She was able to recall the two different venues they danced in and the names of the bands that played. "For a period of no more than five minutes Dorothy talked animatedly and spontaneously with us about these and other aspects of her life as if there was no impairment" Barber says. "She appeared for the first time since we had met her to be alert attentive responsive and very much in the present… " Music therapists have long reported symptomatic improvements in Alzheimer’s patients including increased social interaction reduced depression lower levels of agitation and greater focus and improved cognition language abilities and emotional skills. A new study in the journal Brain has also just reported potential benefits for stroke patients (see The Pulse opposite page). But with most reports lacking an exploration of the physiological whys and wherefores Barber — a musician and former music educator who has completed a doctorate looking at the electro-physiological processes that music stimulates in the brain — decided it was time to investigate further. The aims of his research were to find out if there are objective measures to show the extent of any benefits from music therapy which could then be used to help design music intervention protocols. In his first study Barber enlisted the help of 11 Alzheimer’s sufferers whose impairment ranged from moderate to severe and 17 control subjects. nce connected to an EEG machine which records brain electrical activity from the surface of the scalp the participants were read stories and played both familiar and unfamiliar music. Barber then measured the frequency generated at each electrode point and the degree to which the 171 electrode pairs worked together.

htm –>Connected: Expensive home electronic system has everythingSaturday February 23 2008By David RadinIf you were designing your dream home what would you put into it? Steve and Geri Recht of Upper St. Clair included an electronic system that brings to mind images of James Bond receiving a new device from Agent Q. The Rechts’ system is part stereo part computer part home control center. From various places in their home they can push a button to turn on the sound change stations watch TV or even turn on the lights. There are other control systems in the neighborhood but probably none as diligently researched as Mr… The part of the system that really sets it apart is the remote control capability. In their kitchen they have a wireless color flat-panel touch screen about the size of a laptop screen. From there they can change the music create playlists and program the system. If they are preparing for a party they can set up the speaker configuration to play the same music in various rooms; or they can set up the lights to create the perfect ambience throughout the house. This panel might remind you of a large screen iPod because it allows you to flip through cover art of each CD that is downloaded from the Internet. (The Internet connectivity also allows the system to be remotely programmed by the vendor — or by the Rechts when they’re away from home. )Smaller flat-panel touch screens adorn the walls of several other rooms including in their master bath.

The bass albeit slightly muddy occasionally complements the mid-range very well creating a very pleasing blend of sound. Guitar riffs are quick and powerful and vocals are strong and clear. Electronic and pop music is great on the HX5BT as well with the bass’ power delivering thumping beats. Softer piano-based tunes didn’t seem as lively as guitar-driven music in our tests and slower notes especially seemed to fade a little too quickly. Volume on the Hi-Fi is good although we did feel that it could be louder. With the unit’s propensity towards music such as rock and electronic we would have liked to have been able to really crank it. As it is we found maximum volume to be very loud but still a comfortable listening level… Softer piano-based tunes didn’t seem as lively as guitar-driven music in our tests and slower notes especially seemed to fade a little too quickly. With the unit’s propensity towards music such as rock and electronic we would have liked to have been able to really crank it. As it is we found maximum volume to be very loud but still a comfortable listening level. f course with the HX5BT’s bevy of inputs volume will often depend upon the mp3 player PC or similar device which is connected to the Hi-Fi system in which case maximum volume may be too loud but by the same token it could also be too quiet. A bit of a larger range in volumes would have been an improvement. Nevertheless we found that we only really encountered distortion after about 90 per cent volume and even then it was quite minimal.
