Frederic Rzewski commanding and contemporary
Seattle Times – Feb 29, 2008
Rzewski has lived and taught in Belgium since 1977. During the ’60s period of great political upheaval Rzewski and his avant-garde circle proposed the ideal of an art music communally created in the moment — sometimes even with audience participation. In 1966 he pioneered live-improvised electronic music with the trio Musica Elettronica Viva with Richard Teitelbaum and Alvin Curran and worked with jazz artists Anthony Braxton and Steve Lacy. But improvisation is less the point with Rzewski than his stunning virtuosity and command of complex compositional strategies. His best-known piano work is a series of variations on the South American protest song by Sergio rtega “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” (1975) which became a symbol of Chilean resistance against the American-assisted overthrow of President Salvador Allende. Rzewski’s moving 1992 work “De Profundis” dramatizes the ostracism of gays alternating between piano and a recitation of scar Wilde’s letter to Lord Alfred Douglas written from Reading Gaol where Wilde was imprisoned for two years because he was a homosexual.

Layering the in-joke further “nouvelle vague”translates to “new beat” in Portuguese the native language of manyof the bossa nova guest vocalists. Their studio album A BandeApart was presumably inspired by Jean Luc Goddard’s 1964 filmof the same name. Given the duo’s name it’s not surprising that Collin is a filmbuff. He released Coming Home in 2007 a collection ofclassic film soundtracks including Gato Barbieri’s Last Tangoin Paris and Michel Legrand’s score for the originalThomas Crown Affair… His cinema obsession is something he shares with Philippe CohenSolal a former cinema soundtrack composer who leads moderntangoists the Gotan Project joining Nouvelle Vague on theirMelbourne sojourn. His latest project The MoonshineSessions is a collaboration with former Bob Dylan sidemanBucky Baxter. Enlisting such country luminaries as Jim Lauderdaleand David lney the album achieves a highly appealing dirt-floorambience; faithful to country while exploring a striking ifdelicate marriage between delightful twang and electro tang. Having selected Charlie Rich and Glen Campbell tracks for NouvelleVague’s Late Night Tales album in 2006 Nouvelle Vague’sCollin is by no means immune to country moods either. Solal’s DJ-versus-pedal-steel interpretation of the album hasbeen a feature of recent Nouvelle Vague European shows Solal beingan ’90s old house acquaintance of Collin. Solal also took direct inspiration from cinema for MoonshineSessions. “I compare my work to a film director’s.
