He received two grants from the San Jose State University Foundation (1969 and 1974) for research into electronic music and in 1970 became professor of music and director of the electronic music studios at the university. In 1973 he attended Chowning’s music seminar at Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Center. Strange was one of the leading authorities on analogue electronic music; his Electronic Music: Systems Techniques and Controls (1972) is now a classic text. He also wrote Programming and Meta-Programming the Electro-rganism (1974) the operations manual for the Buchla Music Easel and has documented the 200 Series synthesizers made by Buchla. He co-founded two performance groups Biome (1967–72) in order to make use of the EMS Synthi and with Buchla in 1974 the Electronic Weasel Ensemble. He was president of the International Computer Music Association (1993–8) and has appeared as a guest artist-lecturer throughout the world. With his wife Patricia they have recently published The Contemporary Violin: Extended Performance Techniques.

Ahead of the performance in the isolated North music director Lorin Maazel said the orchestra has been a force for change in the past noting that its 1959 performance in the Soviet Union was part of that country’s opening up to the outside world that eventually resulted in the downfall of the regime. “The Soviets didn’t realize that it was a two-edged sword because by doing so they allowed people from outside the country to interact with their own people and to have an influence” he told journalists in Pyongyang. “It was so long lasting that eventually the people in power found themselves out of power. When asked if he thought the same could happen in North Korea he said: “There are no parallels in history; there are similarities. While the Soviets were viewed as a threatening superpower Maazel said the Korean peninsula has a different role in the world because of its small size… n the streets of Pyongyang earlier Tuesday North Koreans said they were aware of the orchestra’s visit. But the trip was not yet front-page news here: A picture of the orchestra’s airport arrival to the North Korean capital was printed inside the main Rodong Sinmun newspaper along with brief stories on the event. At the Grand People’s Study House the country’s largest library said to include 30 million volumes journalists saw North Koreans looking up information in an electronic catalog reading industrial journals and attending language and science classes. In one boisterous classroom teacher Jeon Hyun Mi led students through an English lesson using materials from “Family Album U. ” an American-designed program based on the life of a fictional family.

” While no one would confuse her decades of dance-floor anthems with rock and roll the most successful female artist of all time has had a remarkably strong nearly three-decade career. Initially dismissed as a Bruce Springsteen wannabe Cougar hit his stride in the early ’80s when he released the rock radio staples “Jack and Diane” and “Hurts So Good. ” He soon became known for chronicling the plight of the downtrodden American farmer and worker with such folk-inspired albums as Scarecrow and The Lonesome Jubilee. Along with Neil Young and Willie Nelson Mellencamp helped found the annual Farm Aid concert benefiting small American farms.
