"At Wesleyan he and Goldwasser discovered they had similar tastes in music. "We were hanging out making weird loops on computers. We started doing more electronic (music) trying to do short performance-art type shows where we’d make a lot of noise and try to annoy people like kids do in college. "It started evolving into trying to annoy people by making really grossly catchy pop music. Like disgusting but fun to dance to. "They played at houses because there were no clubs in Middletown. "We called it a ‘show’ but it was in someone’s living room… "ur attitude is trying to be confrontational and weirding people out a little bit. "VanWyngarden and Goldwasser told the people at Columbia they weren’t going to play the music they played in college. "We called (it) stupid poppy electronic music which we like but we weren’t going to make more music like that" VanWyngarden said. "They were still cool with it. We went and wrote a much weirder complex album. It has a lot of darker lyrics on it. ""Weekend Wars" VanWyngarden’s favorite song on the CD is about "a group of kids learning how to survive after some apocalyptic thing.
