He records himself playing an instrument then loops that recording layering on new recordings through the course of a song. For being the work of only one person the music spans a range of genres with nods to rock folk punk and electronic. The experimental nature of the music sets up a hard line to walk between experimenting for its own sake and creating something truly listenable and it’s one that Schauer’s music navigates sometimes more successfully than others. As the son of a pianist mother and sound engineer father Schauer naturally enough started out on the piano but it didn’t take. Nor as it turned out did the saxophone. It wasn’t until he tried drums that he found an instrument that held his interest.

Nash began writing songs and recording them on her computer using the GarageBand software program. Within a few weeks she had posted several songs on her MySpace page. The British singer Lily Allen discovered Nash’s music and featured Nash’s page in her MySpace “Top 8. ” Soon Nash had signed with Fiction Records a subsidiary of Polydor. At least so the story goes. Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs < Music | PopMatters
PopMatters – Jan 14, 2008
The only way I can musically describe this release to those who haven’t heard it is to say that it’s the most organically synthesized most precisely sloppy most experimentally BUBBLEGUM record I’ve ever heard. Synths while extensively used are only overtly “electronic” on the songs that need to be. Guitars are used sparingly but to maximum effect. For its epic length the collection occasionally (rarely) drags but when it does it doesn’t for long. Argh!!!! I don’t know. It’s hard to wrap your arms around let alone digest everything that’s going on in a release this massive yet enthralling no matter how much I try.
