Later Havok immersed himself in the “futurepop” genre which combined dark dance-y electronica with melodic vocals. Puget who joined AFI roughly around the same time of Havok’s futurepop immersion shared his bandmate’s long-standing love of electronic music. He soon found himself indulging his passion for Daft Punk Depeche Mode Ministry Squarepusher Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 spending a great deal of time programming electronic music which in turn led to a plan to start an entirely electronic side project: no organic instruments just synths keyboards drum machines and software. However AFI’s writing recording and touring regimen left Puget and Havok precious little time to work on Blaqk Audio until the summer of 2006 when they began to write songs for what would become CexCells making use of the scant downtime afforded by travel intervals as AFI traversed the globe on tour. Music was programmed and assembled on the road melodies and vocals written abroad and at home then finally the two would converge in Los Angeles to track vocals. The guys spoke with andPP on a recent trip to Toronto.

The Triple Rock (Social Club Minneapolis) was great though they never treated us like kids. What’s your approach to using electronics and computers in music?I come from a classical music background and like the human element a lot. I try to balance the electronic sound with the humanness of making music. It’s a struggle to balance it but I enjoy the challenge of trying to make it work out. Your influences of late? The drum machine work comes a lot from hip hop. Minneapolis has pretty nice hip hop scene right now and I like to go to shows and buy records. Also the Notwist (Germany) is a band I’ve been listening to lately.

Jonny Greenwood – Music – New York Times
New York Times – Jan 16, 2008
In its purest form all frequencies are heard at the same intensity but Mr. Greenwood takes artistic license: even when the chords are at their densest melodies emerge as the strings change pitches. “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” could easily have been an electronic piece instead of an orchestral score. Greenwood began work on it by recording himself playing every available note on the viola. Then using Pro Tools a flexible digital editing program he configured those notes into a piece on 36 separate tracks (one for each instrumental line) and shaped the attacks releases and dynamics of each note. nce the recording was complete he transcribed it the old-fashioned way using pen and paper.
