Two stages were set up in the city centre featuring local and regional rock and ethno-stars. A concert-party was also planned for the first time across the river Sava in the sprawling New Belgrade where DJs would play electronic music. Concerts in the central Republic Square were to start early afternoon Tuesday and people were invited to bring children to a carnival in car-free downtown streets and to the city zoo for free. Some 10000 tourists mostly from the region were expected to join the parties on the streets clubs boathouses and “kafanas” rowdy Balkan restaurants with live music and plenty of grilled meat. Authorities have appealed to Belgraders not to use firecrackers in crowded places. In the past pyrotechnics thrown into the crowd have caused serious injuries.
NZ’s first ska music festival set for early next year
stuff.co.nz – Dec 31, 2007
Toots and Grooves featuring a showcase of about 40 New Zealand acts has been set down for January 25 and 26 at Tatum Park just south of Levin in Horowhenua. Ska music which originated in Jamaica as a precursor to reggae is dance music based around the offbeat. It saw its biggest popularity with the two tone movement in England in the late 1970s with bands such as The Specials and Madness. Festival organiser Philipp Jaser said there had been a growing interest in ska music in New Zealand with more bands emerging in the last 10 years than before. "I'm not hoping to make money out of this festival – it's just really time for it. "He just wanted to get the festival started see it grow from there Mr Jaser said… It talks to people and it crosses boundaries. "Bands who would be playing included long-time ska acts The WBC and The Managers from Auckland and Wellington's The ffbeats. Roots samba alternative electronic and DJ acts would also be part of the festival with Wellington Batucada and Hikoikoi among those appearing. Mr Jaser said he planned to make the festival an annual event and hoped to incorporate Australian bands in the future. The event which starts at midday on Friday and runs through until late Saturday night would have one main stage and a DJ area with a bar. There would be a skanking – the name for dancing to ska music – competition during the festival and spot prizes Mr Jaser said. "It's music that you just can't stay still too.
Music evolution: Now I know nano
Rockford Register Star – Dec 31, 2007
Guys know what that is: We get “gadget” presents preferably of the electronic variety. And then we disappear for the rest of the holiday season… The next recording revolution was stereophonic sound which showed up on my friend’s “stereo” record player in the early 1960s. (We didn’t get a true stereo until later in the decade. ) The music didn’t actually sound better but some instruments came out of one speaker some out of another. So people had to buy two speakers. They spent the next decade replacing their “mono” records with stereo versions. About this time the reel-to-reel tape was introduced as the next big thing. Thankfully it wasn’t.
In the Fight ver Piracy a Rare Stand for Privacy
New York Times – Dec 31, 2007
Sherman asked incredulous. “We found it really surprising and disappointing. ”No one should shed tears for people who steal music and have to face the consequences. But it is nonetheless heartening to see a university decline to become the industry’s police officer and instead to defend the privacy of its students. The recording industry may not be selling as much music these days but it has built a pretty impressive and innovative litigation subsidiary. In the past four years record companies have sued tens of thousands of people for violating the copyright laws by sharing music on the Internet. The people it sues tend to settle paying the industry a few thousand dollars rather than risking a potentially ruinous judgment by fighting in court… In the past four years record companies have sued tens of thousands of people for violating the copyright laws by sharing music on the Internet. The people it sues tend to settle paying the industry a few thousand dollars rather than risking a potentially ruinous judgment by fighting in court. “People get pushed into settlements” said Fred von Lohmann a lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation a civil liberties group.
Athens Music Scene
The Athens News – Dec 31, 2007
It’s not Thursday already. This is a special Monday Athens Music Scene in honor of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day today and Tuesday. Nearly everyone has his or her top-10 music lists. I find it hard to remember that much. My musical memories tend to be tied up in the gigs that I play… There is a dinner package available. Jackie ‘sPapadosio close out the old year and welcome the new for the third year running at Jackie ‘s Pub and Brewery. Their continued melding of electronic and computer-generated whatnot into their groove-based jams continues to fascinate fans. Mister Got Heat (who win Band Name of the Year That I had Most Fun With for 2007) will open the night with their funked-up tunes. Blue GatorThe Blue Gator opens its doors for the NYE party and welcomes a host of bands to the upstairs bar: n the Rocks Civilian Dancing Dan and the Red Hot Licks Slaughter Drive and Without Papers. This show with the exception of WP seems to cater toward the generally disenfranchised youthful population of Athens a noble act indeed. The kitchen will be in full-swing too so your dinner options are varied.
