From concepts behind the original “Bionic Woman” to prototypes of those monstrous first computers old impressions of what tomorrow might be like have charm from an historical perspective. Much of electronic music sounds similarly quaint these days especially older subgenres such as drum ‘n’ bass and jungle music both of which were mastered in the 1990s by Photek aka Los Angeles-based producer Rupert Parkes. In the 1990s music like that on “Form & Function Vol. 2″ — Photek’s new not-quite follow-up to 1998′s “Form & Function” — had a mystical atmosphere wherein machinery produced some kind of murky organic-feeling life as if the future pushed all the way into some primitive new world that might be akin to prehistoric earth. Now it sounds more kitschy than anything as Parkes and his collaborators roll out mixes and remixes on waves of synthetic swells rustled by manic jazz-influenced drum programming. Still it’s easy enough to embrace the atmosphere as Chiara’s mildly melodramatic vocals sail over the rippling electronic seas of “Love & War” and as the swampy foundation of “Ni Ten Ichi Ryu (Teebee Remix)” holds up to the maelstrom of banging beats and disjointed nuance.
