It’s a hot summer’s day on the patio at Ronnie’s in Kensington Market in Toronto and I’m joined by the good looking foursome which also includes guitarist and newest member Will Stapleton and bassist Dan Kurtz formerly of the New Deal. Their second concert ever saw the band playing a show with New rder which was followed by a tour in support of Duran Duran during which they landed a record deal. h yeah and somewhere along the way they were slapped with the label of being “the next big thing. ” Their battle may just be proving to the world that they live up to the hype… There’s only so much I knew how to do with a guitar and a piano and voice. Now I write from the same place but I think I can go to places I wasn’t able to before. “We’re into beats and dance music unless it’s shit and that’s always been the basis for most of our songs anyway” added Kurtz. “The difference I think [is that] Tina writes songs as opposed to us like writing a house track with Tina diva vocalizing over top of it. The band then launched into an encore of ‘Mathletics’ the song that was controversially ommitted from ‘Antidotes’. The festival now in its second year took place at London’s Victoria Park and mixed music with village fete-style events including a tug of war splat-a-rat and a carrot eating contest. ther performers included Noah And The Whale Fionn Regan Wild Beasts Tunng and Jeffrey Lewis. Backstage liggers included Klaxons and 2008 ShockWaves NME Awards presenter and ‘Gavin And Stacey’ star Mat Horne… The band then launched into an encore of ‘Mathletics’ the song that was controversially ommitted from ‘Antidotes’. Mystery Jets however were forced to pull out of the festival due to illness and Dan Deacon missed out after having his passport stolen.
