She brings past lessons into the present
Boston Globe – Aug 31, 2007
Elodie is the epitome of a chanteuse. She’s automatically dubbed as such because she was a) raised in Paris and b) she is a singer. But her breathy intimate voice cautiously crooning surreal lyrics over an electro backdrop also captures the evocative quality of the word perfectly. Then there’s her name: pronounced eh-loh-dee with that extra exclamatory sigh of a syllable oh. It’s a moniker that Elodie says is something she “took back from her childhood. ” Elodie is not an uncommon French name and there were two in her junior school class so she was simply Elodie (as in zanne) in order to differentiate. Elodie who performs at the Middle East Upstairs tonight is at a point in her life where much from her past is starting to make sense… “I remember going to see a classic musical with my family as a child and it was like how you say when you see God?” Revelatory. Elodie saw Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and everything made sense. “It’s funny I am doing pop music now but when people ask me I always talk about that. I go back to source. Always like I have to” she says with a thick French accent and a soft shy laugh. She’s speaking from New York’s East Village which she now calls home. She first came to New York on a joint scholarship from the French government and New York University to study musical theater which landed her some small Broadway roles.

It’s like news reporting. That’s my style whether as an artist or a musician. “n Arular Arulpragasam married electro crunk and dancehall reggae rhythms with catchy fight-for-your-right wordplay. Lines such as “Pull up the people pull up the poor” were far from your average pop-chart or dancefloor fare. Named after her father a rebel with Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tigers the disc combined counterculture quips with innovative booty beats and a pop-art aesthetic. It was a concept album dreamed up in her bedroom and on the streets of London. Kala is the sound of Arulpragasam stepping out into the world… ‘ She totally bagged it. She came in like a diva and said ‘I’m going to sing now. ‘ We let her in and she did these nursery rhymes and all this bird music. She was like this 80-year-old woman in a 16-year-old body. It was a privilege. “Wilcannia Mob a crew of schoolchildren from the Australian outback are the unlikely rappers on Mango Pickle Down River. Arulpragasam found a tape of their song then added her own rap and beefed up the bed track a spare mix of hip-hop beatbox and didgeridoo.

“We encouraged him to really tour and get that sound out there” Smith says. By 2002 when Hirway released the full-length “The Hum of Electric Air” his sound had further evolved toward the rheumy pop of “This Too Shall Pass. ” Electronic flourishes were ushered in and washed-out fuzz-filled expanses jammed the space between verses. Then in 2004 Hirway decamped for California where he now lives and “spent two months totally agog. Visually and culturally – the plants the smells. ” That became part of the writing process Hirway says for the sunny spacious “A Name Writ in Water” which was released in 2004. The album broke from earlier material and was the first ne AM Radio album to really register on a national scale… ” That became part of the writing process Hirway says for the sunny spacious “A Name Writ in Water” which was released in 2004. The album broke from earlier material and was the first ne AM Radio album to really register on a national scale. In a glowing review on the music website Pitchfork a writer called “A Name Writ in Water” “beautiful” and “compelling. ” The band got some play on college and web radio and a long tour followed and then another. “It has been inspiring and great and also dreadful” Hirway says. “It leaves me with a lot of time with my thoughts and at the same time it’s very difficult to write. At most I’ll come up with pieces of songs – little fragments.

Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha hah! (Gasp pant) HA HA HA HAH! (wheeze)When Korn first came out they were like a breath of fresh air next to all the pussy “alternative” music flooding the market. The blend of metal and hip-hop (now shown to be one of the greatest errors of judgment ever made musically) was at the time so cutting edge that a new genre would eventually have to be invented to describe the sound of Korn and their imitators. Unfortunately for Korn their style became so prolifically copied that they ended up sounding derivative themselves by the third or fourth album (depending on who you ask). Now on their eighth fully original studio album “Untitled” Korn is clearly suffering from lack of inspiration. Nu metal has been passed over by the kids in favor of emo and indie rock or just regular old metal minus the “nu”… Now on their eighth fully original studio album “Untitled” Korn is clearly suffering from lack of inspiration. Nu metal has been passed over by the kids in favor of emo and indie rock or just regular old metal minus the “nu”. In an attempt to make themselves relevant again Korn has integrated an over-produced “electro-gothic” sound similar to the last NIN album. Unfortunately this just makes them sound even more dated. Stereo Total brings European affectations via ‘Paris-Berlin’
Chicago Daily Herald – Chicago Daily Herald – Aug 31, 2007
Pan-European duo Stereo Total returns with their eighth album of quirky electro-punk. France’s Françoise Cactus and Germany’s Brezel Göring stick to their tried-and-true formula of gnarly garage rock guitars vintage keyboards and lo-fi beats which combined with their multilingual lyrics makes their music impossible to pin to any one time or place. From the spacey “Lolita Fantôme” to the swinging “Relax Baby Be Cool” Cactus has a perfect voice for this somewhere between cutesy and snotty. She bops along with “Baisers del l’Enfer de la Musique” sounding pleasant enough peppering her French with names of American rock icons but when she slips in a jubilant “I wanna be by you!” it’s simply adorable. Göring’s sleepy drawl adds a note of continental ennui to the mix. While he would probably suck energy from the crackling likes of “Plastic” “Plus Minus Null” or “Chewinggum” he sounds charmingly disaffected croaking over a trumpet on “Ich Bin Der Stricherjunge” or trading seductive lines with Cactus (his girlfriend) on the funky “Ta Voix au Téléphone… Göring’s sleepy drawl adds a note of continental ennui to the mix. If you threw it on at a party your guests might be forgiven for assuming you’re listening to several albums on shuffle. Those who embrace Euroculture that’s diverse — and just a bit twee — should enjoy the effect.
