“It’s very exciting” said Jesse Evans co-owner of 30proof a Sonoma company that developed the KML layer that will intertwine Krause’s recordings with Google Earth. “We’re using technology to remake and redistribute sound to people who wouldn’t buy a nature CD people who have a tie to the geography of the sound” Evans said. It’s a new direction for Krause who dropped out of the folk music scene in the early 1960s pioneered the use of electronic music synthesizers and became hooked on the wild after recording natural sounds for use in a synthesized music album for Warner Brothers records. The album title “In a Wild Sanctuary” was prophetic. Ten years later Krause closed his 50-employee business — manufacturing professional audio equipment and making commercials — and devoted himself full time to traveling around the planet to capture its native sounds. Now an acknowledged expert in the field Krause researches and creates soundscapes for major filmmakers aquariums and museums including the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. In June he will travel to Katmai National Park in Alaska to record the grizzly bears and the effect of human life on wildlife for the National Park Service.
