Hot Chip – DJ Kicks
Resident Advisor – May 25, 2007
Hot Chip on their effort seem to have really understood this which means the contents of their mix is not really that much of a surprise. Not that this is a criticism ? when you have such a pleasant and tasteful aesthetic as Hot Chip do it’s a pleasure to hear anything even if it is variations on a familiar theme. Hot Chip’s selections then closely navigate the heritage of their own sound. For their daft party vibe you get the block party hip hop of ‘I Got a Man’ by Positive K and ‘Mess Around’ by Ray Charles.

html”–>Marr claims to be enjoying this fresh sound an ocean away from the manneredconfines of current British bands and brings expanded brighter moments tothe band – a sparkling strum here a funky riff there. nstage he got stuck into the head-nodding rock as the band’s two drummersrat-a-tat-tatted through older favourites such as Float n while the introto their single Dashboard sounded reminiscent of Getting Away With It a hitfor another of Marr’s bands Electronic. Just as Brock’s surreal and doomed sentiments often run riot across hislyrics Modest Mouse played havoc with the pace. Two drummers twoguitarists and an array of trumpets and accordions would all collide for anextended climax then fall away for some banter from Brock before anothersix minutes of troubled rock cranked up again. ccasionally the warmth of the band’s more laid-back melodics filled the air. Fireit Up from the new album was a case in point though the singer was stilltempted to bark half his lines.
